Busy Week

We've had a fun and busy couple of weeks in 5th grade. Don't forget tomorrow is school-wide Dot Day, and students are encouraged to wear polka-dotted clothing to school. Dot Day is a fun day to celebrate uniqueness and creativity.

Check out some pictures and info below from some our learning and activities the past two weeks.

Science

We've been learning about food chains, and students worked in groups to make a food chain model from a different ecosystem. The kids learned about the producers, consumers, decomposers, and scavengers in their ecosystem and shared their model with the class.

We also did an experiment to test whether or not air has mass. We constructed a homemade balance, trapped some air in a bunch of balloons, and tested our hypothesis. Ask your child what happened! Also ask them about "General Sherman", one of the tallest Sequoia Trees in the country. We learned some pretty interesting stuff about what plants are mostly made of.

Show and Tell and Birthday Girl

We had a huge, but friendly and well-behaved guest join us for Show and Tell last week when David brought in his dog, Luna. We also had fun celebrating Aubrey and wishing her a Happy Birthday.

Social Studies

In Social Studies we are continuing to study our states and capitals. We have mastered the Southwest region and we are almost finished learning the West region.  Next week, we'll move on to learn the Midwest.

Math

In math we have finished up Unit 1. Students have learned how to find area and volume.  They've also learned a little about order of operations and writing and solving expressions. We'll be starting Unit 2 and diving deeper into multiplication and division with large numbers next week.

MakerSpace

On Monday, we visited the media center for MakerSpace Monday. The students were given a challenge card then were asked to build something to meet the challenge using either legos or straws and connectors. We have some pretty creative kids!

2nd Grade Buddies

The 5th graders were so excited to meet their 2nd Grade Buddies. Our class has partnered with Miss Holbrook's 2nd graders this year. We will get together with our buddies several times throughout the year. I love watching the 5th graders mentor and be a good example to the younger students.
