5th Grade Updates

We've been busy in 5th grade! Check out what we've been up to the past couple of weeks.

Students have been working hard to earn dojo points. When they reach 20 points they can redeem them for a special pass or treat.  The teacher's chair is a popular choice.

In Science we are working through our Matter in Ecosystems Unit.  As part of our study of decomposers, we're conducting a Mold Experiment to see what factors affect mold growth.

We've also learned that producers need air, sunlight, and water to survive.  We've learned about hydroponics and we're growing some plants in water to see how they compare to plants in soil.

In  Social Studies we're continuing through some U.S. geography as we learn about the 50 states by region.

In Math, we just finished our first unit on area, volume, and numerical expressions. We will continue to come back to these concepts throughout the year, but students did a great job exploring with volume and using their skills to find volume and area of objects throughout our room.

Back to School 2021-22

We've had a great first week in 5th grade.  We've spent some time getting to know each other and learning about 5th grade routines and expectations. I wanted to share a few pictures from the week.

ME Bags

We've been sharing about ourselves and our interests through our ME Bags. If your child still wants to bring one in, they can share next week. It's fun getting to know more about each other.

Number Trouble

In math we talked about working together to solve problems and we discussed the importance of finding strategies that work for you.  We did a group activity called Number Trouble which helped groups practice working together to perform a task.

Teamwork
We did several activities this week where students had to work together. We had fun during our makerspace stations where kids had to work together with their groups to complete the building challenge.

Keep checking the blog throughout the year for more pictures and info on what we've been up to in 5th grade.

April is our month for announcements. Miguel did a great job earlier this week!

In our Social Studies unit on Westward Expansion we learned about the Oregon Trail.  We've had a lot of fun this week playing a classroom card version of the Oregon Trail Game.

March Madness Basketball Challenge!  The kids had fun right before break designing a basketball goal and ball launcher from classroom supplies to see how many shots they could make in one minute.

Busy in 5th Grade!

We've been trying really hard to settle into a routine at school now that we (hopefully!) are back in-seat to stay.  This week, students shared their book projects with the class, practiced spelling/vocab words, starting learning about famous African Americans, practiced adding and subtracting decimals, and got to enjoy some fun activities outside for science!  I wanted to share some pictures of our fun with you.
