News from Trailer E

We've had a great start to the year!  We are learning the routines and expectations of being a 5th grader.  I am loving getting to know a new group of kids.  Students shared "Me Bags", and they also created collages called "What's Inside Your Head?" to help us get to know each other a little better.  Almost everyone has finished theirs.  Can you find your child?

We've also spent some time discussing and practicing how to work with a group to accomplish a task.  On Eclipse Day we had to put our skills to the test.  In the Media Center we worked in groups to complete an Eclipse Breakout Activity.  Students had to listen, follow directions, and work together to break codes and solve clues that lead them to their eclipse glasses.

Eclipse Day was so much fun!!  We made Pinhole Projectors that display the eclipse inside a cereal box.

Students recorded the temperature changes throughout the eclipse and during totality.  We found that the temperature dropped 9 degrees while we were outside.  Overall students relaxed on blankets and using their glasses, observed this incredible event.  We tried using a telescope (covered with a protective filter) to view the sun, but only a few students were able to see it because we learned that it is very difficult to find and keep the sun in focus with the filter on.  It was a great day!

Homework packets came home this week, and we are getting into the swing of things in most subjects.  Please let me know if you ever have questions or concerns.  Email is the best way to get in touch with me.  Don't forget to come to 5th Grade Curriculum Chat on Tuesday, September 5th at 7:45 am in the Media Center! We will discuss homework, Ipads, field trips, and more!

Have a GREAT weekend!
