5th Grade Updates

We've had a great first two weeks of in-seat 5th grade!  Here are a few reminders and updates:

  • Don't forget to remind your child to bring a water bottle to school everyday.
  • Remind your child to pack a snack everyday.
  • Dress for the weather.  We'll go outside most days unless in raining.

Friday Folders

  • Friday Folders were sent home today for the first time.  Inside, on the left side, you will see a green sheet inside with scores for Success Ready skills.  You can use the cover of the folder to see what each category means.  These will be filled out approximately every two weeks.  Please sign at the bottom and return the folder to school on Monday.
  • On the right side, you'll sometimes see student work from the week or notes from the office.  Please keep these at home.

Parent Teacher Conferences

  • Parent Teacher Conference week is November 9-13th.  Conferences will be done via zoom this year.  We will spend approx. 10 minutes talking about your child's progress and work habits.  We can also use this time to answer any questions you may have about the year thus far.
  • Look for an email early next week with a link to sign up for your zoom conference!

5th Grade Morning Announcements

  • Our class is the first 5th grade class this year to do the morning announcements over the school intercom.  Thank you to the kids who have volunteered to read and share this 5th grade tradition. Everyone who has done it so far has done an awesome job representing 5th grade and our class.

  • We still have a few spots open at the end of November.  Ask your child if they are interested in reading announcements over the intercom, and have them let me know if they're interested!

The First Day is "Virtually" Here!

 5th grade families,

I am excited to begin this new adventure with you!  This blog is a place where I will share information, post reminders, and share pictures of what we are doing in 5th grade. I will always send an email when I update the blog, so you'll know when to visit this site to get new information.  Check back here throughout the year to stay up to date with all things 5th grade.

I'm looking forward to meeting all my 5th graders on our first day of school class meeting via zoom at 8:00 am on September 8th. Check the Online Learning tab for the zoom link.

Important End of Summer Info

As summer comes to an end and you start to look ahead to 6th grade and middle school, I wanted to let our former 5th grade families know about RBE's Back to School Drive-Thru on September 1st and 2nd from 4:00-7:00. At this event former 5th graders can swing by to pick up their yearbooks from last year and the 5th grade T-shirts that the Missouri Credit made for the kids. I will be there working, and I would love to say hello to everyone and wish the kids well as they get ready for their next adventure.

I am really sad that COVID19 county restrictions for gatherings have made it hard to get the whole class together to say goodbye. Back in March (and even in May!) I had no idea that we would still be adjusting and cancelling events because of the virus. Even though we can't formally get together, I hope you and your kids will take a moment to watch the 5th Grade Video Slideshow that MCU helped to put together for 5th grade parents and students.

I hope everyone enjoyed this summer and good luck in middle school!  Come back to RBE to say hello in the future!

Reading Week and Other News

Reading Week Info

March 9-13th is RBE's Reading Week.  We will spend time celebrating books and authors throughout the week. We will be inviting mystery readers to read to our class, participating in themed dress up days, video-calling with author, Jake Burt, decorating bookmarks, and attending Reading with the Stars in the media center.

Here is the schedule for the dress up days:

Monday- Crazy Sock Day
Tuesday- Pajama Day
Wednesday- NO SCHOOL
Thursday- Dress Like A Book Character Day
Friday- Color Day

If you would like to be a  "Mystery Reader" in our classroom, click the link below for info to sign up. If there aren't any times that work for you, send me an email and we will try our best to make it work!

Children's Literature Festival Field Trip - March 17th - Warrensburg, MO

Thanks to everyone who returned the permission form for our upcoming trip. If you haven't, please return asap.

Some notes about the day:
  • We leave shortly after the bell, so make sure your child is on time to school.
  • This trip involves a lot of walking outside on the University of Central Missouri Campus, so watch the weather and make sure your child dresses comfortably.
  • Students may bring devices for the bus, but they are responsible for them. Devices need to be put away in drawstring bags once we arrive at the campus.
  • Students may choose to purchase lunch on campus (at least $7) or bring a sack lunch.
  • If time allows, we will visit the festival book sale.  Optional: students may bring money to purchase a book.
  • The bus will arrive back at RBE around 3:45.  Please make sure you have arranged for your child to be picked up at that time.  Buses will be gone, and everyone will need a ride home.

5th Grade Info

I'm so happy that we are starting to get back into the routine of school with an almost full week.  We've learned a lot this week as we're continuing our African American Biography Research during ELA time, getting into Unit 5 Equivalent Fractions in math, and learning all about the phases of the moon in Science.

Also, a BIG thank you to all the parents who helped organize or donated items for our Valentine's Party on Monday!

Conferences and Book Fair

I look forward to meeting with everyone next week during parent teacher conferences. I'll be sharing some of your child's work and answering any questions you may have about next year and middle school.  Please let me know asap if you need to reschedule your child's conference. Since we will be talking next week, there won't be a success ready checklist in this week's Friday Folder.  Look for the 3rd Trimester checklist to begin next week.

The Book Fair will be open Monday-Friday next week!  See the schedule below for times.

Monday 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Tuesday 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Wednesday 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Thursday 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
Friday 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM

Friends and Family Day- Monday, February 24th 10:10-11:00

We hope you are able to join us on Monday to visit your child's Special's Class to see what they've been learning in Media and Art.  Specials are from 10:10-11:00, but you should plan to arrive a few minutes early, so you'll have time to check in at the office first.

UPDATED: End of year- important dates!

Due to the amount of snow dates, we have updated/finalized some important end of year activity dates.  Please mark your calendars.

Parent Teacher Conference Forms

Thank you to everyone who turned in your parent teacher conference scheduling form.  If you haven't returned the form (green form in Friday Folder yesterday), please return by the end of this week.  Look for your conference day/time confirmation in next week's Friday Folder.

Snow Science

Today was all about snow!  We practiced teamwork and communication skills by working together to participate in a mini snowman building challenge. We also collected snow to use for some science observations and measurement  and graphing practice.  Check out some pictures below.
