5th Grade Updates

BizTown Volunteer Form:

The gold letter in your child's Friday Folder is requesting volunteers for our upcoming trip to JA BizTown in St. Louis on January 22nd. To ensure a successful visit, we need adult volunteers. Parent volunteers will be in charge of helping students run the businesses at BizTown. (You most likely won't be at the same business as your child, but you will be able to eat lunch with them if you'd like!) If you are able to volunteer, please read the gold letter, fill out the bottom portion of the letter, and return to me no later than Wednesday, Dec. 11th. Please only sign up if you know for sure you'll be able to attend. There is a limited number of volunteers that we are able to bring. Just a heads up- In the past, we have had to have a lottery to determine our volunteers since we had so many parents volunteer. We are so lucky to have so many people willing to help! 😊

What is JA BizTown?

BizTown is a Junior Achievement program that encompasses important elements of community and economy, work readiness, financial literacy, and business management. At BizTown, each student will assume a job, produce and/or sell products, receive a paycheck, work on a business team, repay business loans, shop, and manage a personal bank account. Students will use critical thinking skills to learn about key economic concepts as they explore and enhance their understanding of free enterprise. To learn more about JA BizTown, check out this slideshow that I showed students earlier this week: JA BizTown Overview and Tour

December Calendar of Activities:

In your child's Friday Folder you will find our December Calendar of Activities and Information about our Secret Gift Exchange.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  We will need some supplies for some of our December fun.  If you able to sign up to bring items, I would really appreciate it!  See the sign up link below.

5th Grade Fall Fun

We've had a busy and fun couple of weeks in 5th grade! Thank you to all the parents who helped and donated supplies for the Fall Party.  We appreciate you, and I know the kids had a lot of fun.

Next week is a full week, but 5th grade homework will look a little different. Students will still have spelling words, but they will not be required to do any math sheets or the reading log.  Instead, to conclude our study on the 50 states, students will choose a state to research and will be decorating "Turkey Tom" to represent what they learned about their state.  More detailed info about this project will come home Monday.

Thanks to everyone who was able to attend your child's parent teacher conference. I really do enjoy sharing about your child and getting know my students' families a little better.

Have a great weekend!

Chicken BBQ

Thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated, and supported our Chicken BBQ. I was busy in the Cotton Candy Room (and covered in cotton candy!), but I was still able to see many students and their families.  It was a very successful and fun event!

Book Projects

Today students were able to see their grades on the first book project of the year. We took this as an opportunity to set a goal for ourselves for the next book project.  We will be sharing these at Parent Teacher Conferences in November.

5th Grade Updates

Finally some Fall weather is here, and we've been busy in 5th grade. Fall brings lots of fun activities, and we are looking forward to the Chicken BBQ on October 19th and the 5th grade Fall Party on Wednesday, October 30th at 1:45. Here are some updates and info about what we've been up to.

Book Projects

  • Don't forget Book Projects are due on Friday, October 18th. Students should complete a summary sheet AND a project/presentation to share with the class.

Fall Party

  • All 5th grade classes are combining outside by the shelter for a tailgate themed Fall party.  Please click the link below to sign up to help or volunteer.

ELA

In reading and writing, we have finished Unit 1. Students have read several narrative nonfiction texts, realistic fiction texts, and argumentative texts. Students have also written a personal narrative and they are finishing up an opinion paper about the positive and negative effects of teen social media use. We will share this work with you at conferences.

Math

We are wrapping up our Unit 2 math instruction. Students have learned several strategies to solve multi-digit multiplication problems and long division problems.

Science and Social Studies

We finished our first Science Unit: Matter in Ecosystems and we will be starting our first Social Studies Unit over Native Americans next week.

Busy Week

We've had a fun and busy couple of weeks in 5th grade. Don't forget tomorrow is school-wide Dot Day, and students are encouraged to wear polka-dotted clothing to school. Dot Day is a fun day to celebrate uniqueness and creativity.

Check out some pictures and info below from some our learning and activities the past two weeks.

Science

We've been learning about food chains, and students worked in groups to make a food chain model from a different ecosystem. The kids learned about the producers, consumers, decomposers, and scavengers in their ecosystem and shared their model with the class.

We also did an experiment to test whether or not air has mass. We constructed a homemade balance, trapped some air in a bunch of balloons, and tested our hypothesis. Ask your child what happened! Also ask them about "General Sherman", one of the tallest Sequoia Trees in the country. We learned some pretty interesting stuff about what plants are mostly made of.

Show and Tell and Birthday Girl

We had a huge, but friendly and well-behaved guest join us for Show and Tell last week when David brought in his dog, Luna. We also had fun celebrating Aubrey and wishing her a Happy Birthday.

Social Studies

In Social Studies we are continuing to study our states and capitals. We have mastered the Southwest region and we are almost finished learning the West region.  Next week, we'll move on to learn the Midwest.

Math

In math we have finished up Unit 1. Students have learned how to find area and volume.  They've also learned a little about order of operations and writing and solving expressions. We'll be starting Unit 2 and diving deeper into multiplication and division with large numbers next week.

MakerSpace

On Monday, we visited the media center for MakerSpace Monday. The students were given a challenge card then were asked to build something to meet the challenge using either legos or straws and connectors. We have some pretty creative kids!

2nd Grade Buddies

The 5th graders were so excited to meet their 2nd Grade Buddies. Our class has partnered with Miss Holbrook's 2nd graders this year. We will get together with our buddies several times throughout the year. I love watching the 5th graders mentor and be a good example to the younger students.
